Region of NE France in the upper reaches of
the Meuse and Moselle rivers; bounded to the
N by Belgium, Luxembourg, and West Germany
and to the E by Alsace; area 23,600 sq
km/9,095 sq mi; population (1986) 2,313,000.
It comprises the departements of
Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, and
Vosges, and its capital is Nancy. There are
deposits of coal, iron ore, and salt; grain,
fruit, and livestock are farmed. In 1871 the
region was ceded to Germany as part of
Alsace-Lorraine.
